Jimmy Chin

Jimmy combines a career as a photographer, filmmaker and a professional climber and skier. His wife, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, is a highly accomplished and award-winning film director. Together they are amongst the most sought after documentary filmmakers and adventure sports storytellers working today.

As a 14 year veteran of The North Face Athlete Team, he is one of the most sought- after and recognized adventure sports photographers and filmmakers working today. He has climbed notable first ascents in the Karakoram, traversed the Chang Tang Plateau in Tibet on foot and skied first descents in the Himalayas. He is one of the only people to ski Mount Everest from the summit and climbed the much coveted first ascent of the Shark’s Fin on Meru.

Jimmy’s photography has graced the cover of National Geographic Magazine and garnered numerous awards from PDN, Communication Arts, American Society of Magazine Editors and the Lowell Thomas Journalism Awards. As a director and cinematographer, Jimmy has directed documentaries, TV and commercial projects for The North Face, National Geographic, Apple, Chase, Pirelli, Working Title, and RSA Films. Jimmy’s recent film, Meru, won the Audience Choice Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and made the 2016 Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary.


Jimmy Chin’s latest film, Free Solo, is an intimate, unflinching look at Alex Honnold’s journey toward his rope-free climb of the world’s most famous rock wall—Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan. Find the film, which Chin directed and produced with E. Chai Vasarhelyi, in theaters starting September 28, 2018.

Thom Gruhler

Prior to founding Fjuri, Thom led marketing team for Apps and Services Marketing Group at Microsoft, for commercial and consumer including Office/O365, Skype, Outlook, OneDrive and OneNote.  In his role as one of three divisional marketing VP’s Thom led a cross-functional team of 400, accountable for business planning, product marketing, brand and integrated marketing, demand generation & CRM, sales & partner-channel enablement.

Prior to his role as Office Marketing leader, Thom was the Corporate Vice President and Global CMO of Microsoft’s Windows Division, where he led all division marketing, working closely with product engineers and field partners to ensure customer satisfaction and to drive revenue and market share in the highly competitive sectors of PC, Tablet and Smartphone. Thom also led US and global marketing for the new Windows Phone as Corporate Vice President and Global CMO of the Windows Phone Division.

Before joining Microsoft, Thom served as President of McCann NY, where he led the transformation of McCann NY, readying it for the digital age. He reset the leadership team, defined and recruited new agency talent, redesigned key work processes, and coordinated a multimillion dollar redesign of the agency’s physical space.

In 2008, Thom was recognized for his high-profile leadership, earning the advertising industry’s highest award—induction into The American Advertising Federation’s prestigious Hall of Achievement for professionals under age 40.

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi

E. Chai Vasarhelyi is an award-winning director and producer. She is currently directing Free Solo, a documentary feature for National Geographic with co-director, Jimmy Chin. Her first film, A Normal Life, won Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2003.  Her second film, Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love, was released in theaters in the U.S. and internationally. The film premiered at the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals and won numerous awards including the Special Jury Prize at the Middle East International Film Festival in 2008 and a nomination for the Pare Lorentz Award at the 2009 International Documentary Association Awards.  Touba, a visceral documentary experience that takes the viewer through each step of the annual Mouride pilgrimage, the Grand Magaal in Touba, Senegal, premiered at SXSW 2013 where it won the Special Jury Prize for Best Cinematography.  She returned to Senegal in 2012 to document the heated Presidential elections.  Incorruptible (formerly An African Spring), the intense and unflinching story of Senegalese democracy won the Independent Spirit Truer Than Fiction Award in 2015. Vasarhelyi has directed a New York Times Op Doc, an episode for Netflix’s new non-fiction design series ABSTRACT, and two episodes for ESPN’s non-fiction series Future of Sports. She has participated in the Good Pitch and received grants from the Sundance Institute, the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Bertha Britdoc, the William and Mary Greve Foundation and the National Endowment of the Arts. She was selected as a 2013 Sundance Documentary Film Fellow, named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2005 and received an Achievement Award from Creative Visions foundation in 2008. She is a member of the DGA as well as AMPAS.  She has been featured in numerous publications including, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, Vogue and New York Magazine. She holds a B.A. from Princeton University in Comparative Literature.
